Acucorp Enhances Support for OpenVMS by Offering Thin Client Computing Capabilities
San Diego, CA – May 19, 2004 – Acucorp, Inc., a leading provider of COBOL application extension solutions, today announces its enhanced support for HP’s OpenVMS platform, enabling enterprise-class financial institutions, government agencies and corporate end users to modernize legacy systems through the implementation of thin client architecture and other innovative technologies. Using this architecture, part of the extend® product suite, developers can deploy the user interface portion of their existing applications on a 32-bit Windows front-end client while the rest of the application and data reside on the OpenVMS server. They can also modernize their legacy systems by replacing existing character-based screens with graphical ones. And, these developers can run their applications remotely across most networks, including the Internet.
Applications deployed in a “thin” fashion often perform better when compared to other networking techniques. This is because programs execute on the server where data access is local, simplifying deployment and reducing network traffic.
“Like HP, Acucorp continues to bring the latest technologies to the OpenVMS platform,” explains Joe Seiley, Acucorp’s Director, Strategic Partnerships. “Our commitment to OpenVMS began years ago when we originally announced support for this server line. It continues today with enhancements like thin client computing and OpenVMS on Itanium support.”
Acucorp’s Thin Client technology works by deploying a small program on the Windows client. This program, or ACUCOBOL-GT® Thin Client, communicates with the application running on the server and handles the display of the user interface. Then, the AcuConnect remote COBOL listener service runs on the server and once a request is received, the ACUCOBOL-GT runtime, or COBOL Virtual Machine™, is launched.
In addition to thin client support for OpenVMS and more than 600 other computing platforms, Acucorp’s extend solutions offer COBOL interoperability with .NET, XML and J2EE via Service-Oriented Architecture; deployment on the Internet or a mobile device; development of graphical user interfaces; and access to relational database management systems and ODBC-compliant data.
