Eclipse Now Includes COBOL Plug-In from Acucorp

Plug-in enables application development in COBOL and other computing languages from within the same IDE

San Diego, CA – June 8, 2005 – Acucorp, Inc., a global developer of COBOL modernization solutions and Add-In Provider member of the Eclipse Foundation, today announces the availability of its ACUCOBOL-GT® Eclipse Plug-in. With the Plug-in, users can take advantage of the independent and royalty-free Eclipse open-source integrated development environment (IDE) while maintaining and enhancing their organization’s business-critical COBOL applications on Windows, UNIX and Linux.

Using the Acucorp Plug-in, developers and software testers may create an ACUCOBOL-GT perspective from within Eclipse. They can then use this perspective to access Acucorp’s ACUCOBOL-GT development system—which includes a compiler, the COBOL Virtual Machine™ (runtime), the Vision file system, and a source-level interactive debugger. In addition, this perspective makes it possible to acquire both local and online ACUCOBOL-GT documentation. All of this enables developers to modernize their COBOL business systems, written in ACUCOBOL-GT, while accessing the rich variety of plug-ins offered by an increasing number of software providers contributing to the Eclipse Foundation.

The Acucorp Plug-in also permits organizations that develop applications in COBOL, as well as in C, C++, Java and other languages, to unify their development work into a single IDE. ACUCOBOL-GT has existing interoperability with C, C++, Java and shared libraries. This Java interoperability, which will be enhanced with the upcoming release of Acucorp’s extend®7 software solutions, is now complemented by the ability to run an ACUCOBOL-GT Eclipse perspective alongside a Java perspective. By developing an ACUCOBOL-GT Eclipse Plug-in, Acucorp continues to provide modern capabilities for COBOL, allowing developers to extend their code to whatever environment best meets their needs.

“Our goal has always been to make things flexible for the COBOL developer,” explains Drake Coker, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of Acucorp. “Now that our extend® solutions feature an optional Plug-in for Eclipse, developers have access to even greater application interoperability.”

The ACUCOBOL-GT Eclipse Plug-in is available as a free download on Acucorp’s Web site, www.acucorp.com/eclipse. To use it, the ACUCOBOL-GT development system and runtime are required.
