Acucorp’s extend®7 Features Enhanced COBOL Interoperability with Java, C and C++

Latest release also includes support for distributed IBM CICS® and other COBOL dialects

San Diego, CA – July 26, 2005 – Acucorp, Inc., a global provider of COBOL modernization solutions, today announced the latest release in its extend Interoperability Series. With Version 7 of extend, organizations can enhance their legacy applications and reduce their maintenance costs by taking advantage of new interoperability and compatibility features. These features include robust facilities for integrating COBOL with Java, C and C++; expanded support for distributed IBM CICS; and improved compatibility with other COBOL dialects.

“We have always viewed extend as a road forward for existing COBOL applications,” explained Drake Coker, Acucorp’s Chief Scientist and Co-founder. “With Version 7, developers can continue to enhance the COBOL applications that run their companies without the costs and risks of replacing these business-critical systems.”

New in Version 7

  • Enhanced COBOL Interoperability with Java, C and C++
Included in extend7 are powerful facilities for interoperating with Java. These facilities make it possible to call COBOL from Java and Java from COBOL. As a result, enterprises can now support systems written in both languages, maintaining the COBOL business rules alongside the Java capabilities and support functions. With the release of Version 7, Acucorp also introduces a greatly expanded interface for calling ACUCOBOL-GT® programs from C and C++. This improved functionality simplifies the integration between ACUCOBOL-GT and application servers (like BEA WebLogic™, IBM WebSphere®), which often use interfaces written in C to facilitate their integration with different applications.
  • Expanded Support for Distributed IBM CICS
Using extend7, developers can exploit the flexibility and cost savings inherent in distributed environments while preserving their IBM CICS investments. Acucorp’s latest software release supports both IBM’s TXSeries for Multiplatforms® running on AIX®, HP-UX, Windows® and Solaris™ as well as Sun Microsystem’s Mainframe Transaction Processing (MTP) and Mainframe Batch Manager (MBM) running on Solaris. Leveraging existing IBM CICS skills, companies may now enhance their applications with the benefit of Acucorp’s COBOL modernization solutions, including Internet deployment, and portability, made possible by the COBOL Virtual Machine™.
  • Improved Compatibility with Other COBOL Dialects
To facilitate the conversion of other COBOL systems to ACUCOBOL-GT, Acucorp has added new compatibility compile options to extend7. These options significantly reduce the time and risks associated with converting existing applications.
