Release Overview
Version 6.0
ACUCOBOL-GT Compiler
Limits and Ranges in ACUCOBOL-GT
Size of Data Items Increased
Starting in Version 6.0, COBOL data items may be larger than 64KB in size, with some minor limitations:
- The maximum record size of Vision 2, 3, and 4 files remains 32KB. For those files, no data item in the FILE SECTION may exceed 32KB.
- A data item with a size greater than 64KB may not be given a VALUE phrase.
In addition, data items larger than 64KB may now be used with most verbs, including MOVE, IF, INSPECT, STRING, UNSTRING, and INITIALIZE. Data items larger than 64KB may be reference modified.
Number of Allowable Table Elements Increased
Starting with Version 6.0, it is legal for a table to contain more than 65,280 occurrences (elements). The new limit is theoretically 2,147,483,647, although the operating system will normally run out of data addressing space before reaching this limit.
Compiler Limit on String Length Increased
The compiler's limit on the maximum literal size has been increased from 4,096 characters to 32,767 characters.
